Meet Sydney Phillips

In the spotlight:  Sydney Phillips.

Sydney was the 2013 Miss royalty International Jr. Teen. Throughout her reign, she made many appearances and amazed us with her bubbly personality.  This year, we were honored to crown Sydney as the 2014 Miss Royalty International Lifetime Queen.  She and her mom are going to direct the Miss Royalty International Midwest pageant and we couldn't be more thrilled!

Want to know more?  Read on to find out what Sydney is all about in our exclusive interview below.

MRI - Sydney, what do you like to do in your spare time?
Sydney - I like to play my guitar, competitive cheerleading, traveling, training my dog, shopping with my friends, and volunteering at the Humane Society.

MRI - Is the Human Society your favorite place to volunteer for?
Sydney - Yes.  The Minnesota Humane Society is my favorite place to volunteer for because animals are a huge part of my life.  I want to be a vet when I grow up and have 5 pets myself; one of which I rescued.  I love finding animals a home where they can be loved and cared for.  The Humane Society will always be near and dear to my heart.

MRI -  We love animals, too.  Sounds like you do some great things for them.   Besides volunteering, what's your favorite hobby?
Sydney - My favorite hobby is competitive cheerleading because it challenges me.  I get to be a part of a great team, and I get to travel the country to compete in national championships and of course make cheer friends from other states and countries.  My fondest memory is winning a national championship with my cheerleading team!

MRI -  People would like to know what you did to prepare for the pageant the first time around?
Sydney - To prepare for this pageant, I tried to work a lot on interview and my public speaking skills so I could be comfortable in the interview process.

MRI - Yes, interview is one of the toughest categories, for sure!  What advice would you give to next year's contestants?
Sydney - Advice for next year's contestants is to be yourself, let your personality show, and just have fun.

MRI - That's great advice.  Let's change it up a bit.  What's your favorite vacation spot?
Sydney - My favorite vacation spot is Chile because that's where some of my family lives, so I can enjoy myself on the beach or in the mountains, and still spend time with family.

MRI - That sounds beautiful!  Last question:  What makes Miss Royalty International different from any other pageant you've competed in?
Miss Royalty International is different because the director treats all girls like family and truly cares about each and every one of them.  The system also promotes volunteering and encourages you to be the best you can be.

Wow, what a great interview.  We love the pictures that Sydney submitted.  Looks like she's made some amazing memories so far.  Thanks for reading and have a fantastic week!

Why do we do pageants?

Why do we do pageants?  I think there are several reasons.  I did my first pageant when I was 5 years old.  My mom received a flyer in the mail and well...the rest is history!  I've made a lot of memories in my time doing pageants and am so grateful to have had them.  I thought I'd compile a list of reasons of why I did pageants and see if you agree!

1.  Meet new friends.  I realize you can meet new friends in anything you do, so this may sound a bit cliche, however I truly feel that pageant people are some of the most kind-hearted people out there.  We are such a small community in this huge world, and we really "get" each other.  We know what it's like to have competition, interview, and practice our routines.  We know that we aren't the typical stereotypes that people think pageant girls are.  I still have pageants friends today that I met through my first pageant.

2.  The notoriety and fame.  Ok, so this sounds a bit vain, but it's true.  Let's face it; where Miss Royalty International is, Michelle Becker isn't.  People will want to meet MRI over little ole' Michelle.  I always used my titles to my advantage, though, by helping out those less fortunate.  I loved answering phones for the MDA telethon, running the children's games, selling tickets for silent auctions, performing my talents at fundraising events, and even did a fashion show charity event!  When I got a little bit older, I had a passion for the organization, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).  I helped organize a SADD chapter at a local high school and advocated for more chapters throughout Wisconsin.  I also have a passion for music, so I volunteered for MENC (National Association of Music Education) raising awareness of how important it is to have music in our education system.

3.  The Adrenalin rush.   It is SO hard to get up on a stage and perform in front of a bunch of people, much less your competitors.  I really enjoy this rush, even in that moment when I'm about to go onstage I think to myself "What the heck did I sign up for this for?"

4.  To gain lifelong skills.  My confidence level sky rocketed after competing in my first pageant.  I was always shy to strangers and afraid to talk to them.  Then an epiphany happened when I was on stage with my dad as my escort at 5 years old and I  was the one that sat still smiling and HE was the one fidgeting and nervous! HA!  I also gained lifelong interview skills for my future job interviews.  At  my last job interview, I was told that the owner was really impressed with me. I credit pageants for that.

5.  It was an excuse to get dressed up.  Let's face it...I'm a girly girl and I love to wear makeup, get dressed up, wear sparkly long gowns, and curl my hair into big, bouncy Victoria's Secret model hair.  In the real world, this just isn't an option.  Pageants were a great way to be able to feel feminine and wear amazing gowns that I could never find a place to wear them to in real life.

I absolutely love pageants and I am so glad I can share my passion of pageantry with all of you!  I hope you've had nothing but good experiences and learn from the bad.  And I hope with each pageant you are in, you learn something new about yourself.  It's important that you continue to grow and gain self-confidence in every pageant you do, win or lose.  Remember, the pageant directors and judges are out for your best interest.  We want you to do well and wish everyone could win.  Thank you and goodnight, fellow pageantarians!!!! (yes, I just made that up!)

Mother/Daughter competition duos

Since Easter and Mother's Day are right around the corner, I thought I'd write a blog about mother/daughter duos and competing in pageants.  This year, MRI had two competing mother/daughter duos.  Summer and Savannah came all the way from Alaska, and Jacklyn and Ace came from Wisconsin.  They had such a great time competing together and bonding over something they both love: pageantry.

First, let's meet our mother/daughter duo:  Summer and Savannah

Summer was Ms. Alaska America in 2013.  Savannah had been around the pageant scene before because of her mom, but never actually competed herself.   This was her first pageant.  MRI is so honored to have been her first pageant, and what a better way than to jump right into pageants with her mom!  Here are some pictures of them at the pageant below:

Summer and Savannah both came home with crowns and lots of trophies and gifts from Miss Royalty International 2014

This is what we found on Summer's Facebook page before the 2014 Miss Royalty International pageant!

About to board their flight to compete in Miss Royalty International 2014!

Now let's meet our other mother/daughter duo, Jacklyn and Ace.  They are the opposite of Summer and Savannah; Jacklyn's always watched her daughter compete in pageants, but never competed herself.  Ace is a ball of energy and we had a great time meeting both of them.  May I add that Jacklyn won our "Best Worst Model" contest at our party?  She was quite hilarious!  Here are some pictures of their mother/daughter experience:

That about sums it up.  We are thrilled that these mother/daughter duos had a fantastic time competing together.  They made so many memories together, and that's what pageants are all about.
